Dear readers,
Thank you to all who offered me encouragement on my running and in the Missoula Half Marathon! The half went well; my pacing was much better than the only prior time I've raced it, in 2011, and I beat my previous time...but not by enough! So of course now I want to get faster! (What IS it with this obnoxious competitive drive, anyway?? it causes a lot of pain and suffering!) |

New Work Everywhere! I have been busy, busy, BUSY with gallery requests and with shows -- so this issue is entirely about new images. Enjoy!
- AMERICA'S HORSE IN ART SHOW & SALE - For the first time, I'm showing work with "America's Horse in Art", a show held at the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum. I have two scratchboards in the show, including this one. As you all know, I adore horses, and rodeo is just the perfect theater of horse action for an artist like me; here, a cowgirl and her handsome black quarter horse are rounding the second barrel on course. The opening reception for the show is August 16 (I won't be able to attend). For more information, visit quarterhorsemuseum.com. |

- SOCIETY OF ANIMAL ARTISTS ANNUAL EXHIBITION - It's an honor to have been juried into the SAA as a Signature member, and it's an even bigger honor to have a piece juried into the annual exhibition, which is international in scope. (This good-looking guy was hanging out in Grand Teton park last fall - the light was right and I knew a scratchboard might do him justice.) While I'm not planning to attend the opening reception on Aug. 23, I look forward to hearing about the show from other artists and patrons. For more information, visit The Wildlife Experience website. |

- WESTERN VISIONS "WILD 100" SHOW & SALE - Every fall finds me journeying to Jackson Hole for the Western Visions events at the National Museum of Wildlife Art - the show is international in scope, and it's always a wonderful time to catch up with fellow artists from the U.S. and abroad. This year each artist was asked to send two works (one medium, one larger) and a drawing. I chose to do a suite of wolves for my 3 pieces; here, in my large oil, a white wolf caught in a shaft of light against a moody background. My medium piece will be "(Wolf Suite) Gray Wolf: Tenderness", a 24x18 scratchboard, currently gracing the home page of my website. My drawing is one of my signature white-charcoal-on-black-paper works and features a black wolf. I look forward to seeing the show, and to seeing many of you in Jackson in September! |

NEW at ROWE GALLERY Rowe Gallery has received my work with great enthusiasm, and I'm now preparing for a one-person show at the gallery - the reception will be First Friday, November 7th!! I hope to see some of you there; this will be my first show in Arizona, and I couldn't be more excited! In the meantime, I've sent this new cougar painting to Rowe; this elegant cat is catching a spot of light against a mysterious background. I wanted elements of both night and day in this painting, along with a sense of ambiguity about his setting. |

NEW at DICK IDOL SIGNATURE GALLERY This coiled bobcat is one of two scratchboards I've just shipped to Dick Idol Gallery in Whitefish - the other is a young fox portrait which you can see on my website. Scratchboard is, of course, fantastic for textures - and this dynamic cat pose was just made for the medium! |

READERS RESPOND - footnotes to the July Artzine: "I loved your sharing of the process you used in rendering the painting of the lions. It portrays a couple that seems to have bonded in a way that many humans long to experience."-- I loved this note - thank you, Jean G. "Thanks for sharing the photos of your lion painting. You obviously don't go through the "what the hell was I thinking?" stage of a painting like I do!" -- Sue H., I do indeed experience stages of doubt on some of my pieces...I would guess every artist has her moments of uncertainty, often in the middle of the piece when the end isn't necessarily clear and the work is hard. (But hey, if it were easy anyone could do it!) "Thank you so much for including your step-by-step process of your painting "Lionhearts". Such a beautiful painting and seeing your process is very encouraging to your fellow artists such as myself. It makes you feel as if we are in your studio looking over your shoulder while you paint! I would love to see more of such works included in your Artzine...maybe a step-by-step of one of your scratchboards now??" -- Lori R., I'll have to remember to photograph the process on a scratchboard. Too many images in this Artzine to do a WIP (work-in-progress) sequence, obviously! |
That's it for August. I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter (and thank you to the many readers who respond after each Artzine, thus giving me good material for the "Footnotes" section :-) - if so, I encourage you to share it with anyone and everyone. I appreciate your help in building a bigger audience for my work!
Warmest regards,
